Our finca
is in the beautiful Axarquia region of southern Spain between the mountains and the sea. We are in a valley at the foothills of Maroma, the highest mountain in the area and even at the height of summer, when the surrounding hillsides are burned a rich golden brown from the heat of the sun, we have a green oasis and the constant sound of water cascading down the hillside into the river at the valley bottom.
Many Alma de la Tierra essences are made in situ at the finca from the naturally growing wild plants, while others are made within a short distance, or in the unspoilt Alpujarra mountains. We are lucky in that the Mediterranean is just 20 kilometres away and the mountains are literally on our doorstep, offering us a wide variety of habitats and a longer period of time available for essence making.
We chose this site as the land had been left unattended for some years, and although the original Moorish terracing is still in existence, no chemicals have been used on the land as far as we are aware. Also, the abundance of pure mountain spring water made it a natural choice.
Many of our elixirs are “living” essences, i,e, the flower is not separated from the plant during the essence making process, but the bowl is placed in such a way that the flower remains on the stem. This method can present us with interesting challenges but the result is usually a powerful essence with a flowing, dynamic quality of movement!
Some essences are made with just one flower placed in the bowl. We have found that this is how some essences wish to be made, and if we follow holographic principles we understand that the complete energy pattern of the plant is present in just one flower.
At least one of our essences; Pink Cistus, was made by the flowers literally dancing into the bowl as it was placed by the bush!
